FDA-Compliant Materials for High-Pressure Pumps

High-pressure unit with Cat Pumps plunger pump, geared motor and pulsation dampener in a food processing plant

In food and beverage processing, pharmaceuticals and drinking water supply, the materials that come into contact with the fluid matter. We have been supplying high-pressure pumps in an FDA-compliant version for years. In principle, any Cat Pumps pump with a stainless steel manifold can be built this way.

What "FDA-compliant" means

The FDA does not approve pumps. It defines which materials may come into contact with food; the requirements are set out in US regulation 21 CFR. An FDA-compliant pump is therefore a pump whose wetted parts are made of such materials. For drinking water, the KTW assessment of the German Environment Agency applies in Germany.

What we offer

  • Manifold in 316 stainless steel
  • Seals and O-rings in NBR, EPDM, FPM or PE, depending on the fluid
  • All wetted parts made of FDA- or KTW-compliant materials
  • Conversion of any stainless steel pump in our range
  • Works certificate to EN 10204-2.2 with the test run results and a material specification listing the material of every component

Where the limits are

FDA compliance concerns the materials, not the design. By design, plunger pumps have dead spaces, for example in the valve chambers and around the seals, where fluid can remain. They are therefore not hygienic designs in the sense of EHEDG or 3-A and are not intended for cleaning in place (CIP). They are well suited where the materials matter but the pump itself is not part of the hygienic product zone.

Where our FDA pumps are used

  • Decorative water jet cutting of baked goods
  • High-pressure cleaning in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Cleaning of cheese wheels
  • Rinsing of containers in pharmaceutical applications
  • Cleaning of pipelines in food processing
  • Pumping drinking water
  • Water supply for mountain huts
